PLANTIFUL Z.14: A SPACE FOR WELLNESS
The Plantiful project, completed in 2016 by TORUS in Guatemala City, embodies a harmonious fusion of vegan culinary arts and sustainable design. This endeavor involved creating a vegan kitchen and office space for a couple dedicated to producing organic, plant-based foods.
The design philosophy centered on simplicity and environmental consciousness, utilizing clean lines and natural materials free from chemical treatments. A modular system was implemented to allow for easy disassembly and future expansion, reflecting a commitment to adaptability and sustainability.
A standout feature is the polished granite floor, showcasing a custom-made pattern of black-and-white triangular tiles. This design creates a unique spatial composition, echoing the asymmetrical patterns found in nature while maintaining material authenticity.
The central counter bar serves as a focal point, where products are displayed, prepared, and served. This element defines the spatial distribution, aligning with the overall design's central axis.
Additionally, refurbished wood is used for the suspended ribbed ceiling and side wall, crafted by artisans from Comalapa, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This approach supports local communities and emphasizes sustainability.
The project also incorporates upcycled textiles from "The Denim Project" for uniforms, cushions, and handbags, furthering its sustainable ethos. All refrigeration units utilize hydrocarbon cooling systems to minimize environmental impact, and 100% of the lighting fixtures are energy-efficient LEDs.
Through a collaborative relationship with the clients, TORUS successfully integrated a vegan lifestyle and philosophy into all aspects of the design, resulting in a space that inspires a healthy, simple, and environmentally conscious lifestyle.
