SANTO DOMINGO: HISTORICAL REHABILITATION WITH FORESIGHT

The Claustro Mayor is a historic architectural landmark situated in the heart of Guatemala City. Originally part of the 16th-century Convento de Santo Domingo, this cloistered courtyard has been meticulously restored to preserve its colonial-era charm while integrating modern amenities. The restoration project was undertaken by TORUS, by applying a blending traditional methods with technological advancements.

The Claustro Mayor features a square layout with dimensions of 34 meters per side. Its galleries are characterized by expansive pointed arches, varying in number and width, reflecting the individual contributions of donors over time. The roof is adorned with simple ribbed vaults, and the arcades are embellished with intricate tracery, some of which display the heraldic shields of notable benefactors, including the Generalidad del Reino and the families Castellví, Codinats, and Esplugues.

The restoration aimed to revitalize the space for contemporary use while honoring its historical significance. The design approach focused on maintaining the integrity of the original architecture, utilizing traditional materials and construction techniques. At the same time, modern interventions were introduced to enhance functionality and accessibility, ensuring the space could accommodate a variety of events and activities.

Today, the Claustro Mayor serves as a versatile venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and gatherings, offering a unique setting that bridges the past and present. Its restoration stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of historical preservation and modern design, providing a space that honors its heritage while serving the community's evolving needs.
