NATIONAL MARIMBA INSTITUTE
A NATIONAL SPACE FOR A NATIONAL INSTRUMENT – TORUS AT THE INSTITUTO DE LA MARIMBA
TORUS was entrusted with providing specialized technical assistance for the interior design of the National Institute of Marimba, located within Guatemala's most iconic cultural complex, the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center. Aligned with our philosophy of cross-disciplinary excellence, we assembled the country’s most renowned experts in museum design, acoustics, and lighting to collaboratively shape a culturally and technically rigorous proposal.
Our team produced a comprehensive technical dossier, detailing every aspect of the design and execution. This document served as a guiding framework for the general contractor, ensuring fidelity to the project’s conceptual and acoustic vision.
As part of this work, TORUS curated the Marimba Museum, developing the museographic script and schematic design. With a limited budget and significant conceptual and time constraints, we proposed a solution that reflects the nature of music itself: evolving and alive. The museum was conceived as a space that would grow over time—adaptive, immersive, and responsive to future content.
Simultaneously, we developed an acoustic and spatial design strategy for the marimba learning workshops and auditorium, balancing educational needs with technical precision. This ensured optimal sound performance while maintaining an intimate connection with Guatemala’s most emblematic musical tradition.
Through this collaboration, TORUS contributed to creating a space that honors the marimba as both an instrument and a living cultural legacy—merging design, heritage, and technical mastery in service of Guatemala’s national identity.
