PARENTHESIS
PARENTHESIS: AN ARCHITECTURAL INSTALLATION OF REFLECTION AND TRANSITION
Parenthesis is an urban installation designed by TORUS (Creative Lab) in Guatemala City, exploring the sensory effects of various sound and light frequencies on human perception. Created for the 9th Biennial of Visual Arts of the Central American Isthmus (BAVIC), the project invites visitors to experience a deliberate pause within the urban environment.
The installation features a glowing box that serves as a space for occupants to pause and engage with neuro-sensorial qualities through binaural beats and LED lighting. These elements aim to induce brain activity and balance mood, promoting deep relaxation, meditation, and creativity.
Externally, metal sheets clad the structure, resonating with the internal frequencies and reflecting the chaotic noise prevalent in emerging cities. This design choice symbolizes the superimposition of urban soundscapes, creating a dialogue between the installation and its surroundings.
Internally, visitors are immersed in a sensory experience that prioritizes sound and light over visual stimuli, challenging the dominance of sight in contemporary urban living. By engaging other senses, Parenthesis encourages occupants to realign their perception of reality and regain awareness of their context.
Alejandro Biguria of TORUS emphasizes that the project seeks to break away from the visual dominance in urban experiences, offering a space where individuals can recover from routine and enhance their sensory awareness.
Through its innovative use of sound, light, and materiality, Parenthesis serves as a reflective pause within the cityscape, inviting visitors to explore the interplay between sensory perception and the urban environment.
